King Smash VR (Originally known as Monkey See Monkey Swat) is a VR game that started out as a project for CS3247 early 2018. At that time our team composed of Mervyn Yee (Lead designer), Wei Yin (3D model designer) and Jie Wei (Sound Designer).

Now, we’re continuing the development of King Smash VR in CS 4350, with two new team members, Albert Yeoh and Angel Wong.

King Smash VR is a “King Kong” simulator. Where players take the role of a giant rampaging gorilla, atop metropolitan skyscrapers and smacking down the attacking planes. That is the entire idea of it. Oh and since it’s in VR, when i say smacking down planes, you really are swinging your arms to smack down the planes.

On our first version of the game, players have to hang on to the buildings with one hand and smacking planes with the other. They also have to manage their grip strength, if not they would fall to their deaths. Getting shot at by planes decreased grip strength, while hitting planes increased grip strength.

While we felt that the idea was interesting and fresh, we’ve realised that it took away from the core fun of the game, which was destructive fun. We essentially took away one hand from the core gameplay of destroying planes.

Thus, in our new version of the game, we’ve decided to simplify the gameplay, but improve on the mechanics and aesthetics of the game. We have plans to artificially increase the reach of the player as well as changing the destruction effects of the plane (It used to be the planes explode into oblivion. But now it shatters into pieces.

We’ll be drawing inspiration from fruit ninja, whack a mole etc and we want our players to be so into it that their arms will be tired and they’ll be exhausted but still laughing after playing our game.
