We finally settled on a name! Welcome to King Smash VR!
An advantage that VR brings to games is a deeper degree of immersion. Allowing a player to instantly transition into a different dimension, our dimension, within seconds would really help bring out the experience we want to deliver. And so, we began to beautify our game world. What we started with was a small city surrounded by mountains.

First, we had to extend the world and make it feel bigger. Buildings beyooooond the horizon. This would make the level feel boundless and with so much to explore. Furthermore, we used volumetric fog to help blend out the abruptness of change between the world and the sky.

This resulted in the following effect: A big dull city, waiting to be SMASHED by a giant monkey.

We also experimented with different weathers and time of the day for different levels to help with the immersion. The different levels of visibility in the different stages also made for interesting gameplay as it became harder to see the plane until they get close!
While this made the world look and feel better, something was missing... How can it be a huge and bustling city when the roads and streets are empty??

We got a free set of low poly car models from turbosquid (https://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/3d-city-vehicles-simple-model-1160672), threw in a few particles and lights and voila!
We then had them move along a pre-determined set of waypoints along the highway and it turned out really well! Add 11 more car models into the scene, sprinkle in a few hapless humans and cue the giant monkey and we have a bustling city!

With more moving elements in the scene (besides the planes and the Kong himself), the city is starting to come alive! Next, we will be looking at how the player can interact with these environmental objects. How else do you think we can make the city alive?
Stay tuned for more updates on King Smash VR! (See those yellow cubes? Wonder what they are...)
